What Is Blue River?

Blue River is a small mountain community of roughly 700 year-round residents, nestled along Highway 9 just 2 to 5 miles south of Breckenridge. Despite its proximity to one of Colorado's most popular ski towns, Blue River maintains a peaceful, residential character — tall pines, mountain views, and the sound of the river running through the valley.

The town sits at approximately 10,300 feet elevation in Summit County, surrounded by the peaks of the Tenmile Range. It's a place where moose wander through yards, where the night sky is full of stars, and where the pace of life slows down — even in peak ski season.

Why Stay in Blue River Instead of Downtown Breckenridge?

Downtown Breckenridge is wonderful — but it can also be crowded, noisy, and expensive. Blue River offers a compelling alternative:

  • Space and quiet — Homes in Blue River are surrounded by trees, not other tourists. You get a genuine mountain retreat experience.
  • Better value — Nightly rates are often lower than comparable properties in town, and you get more square footage.
  • Just a 10-minute drive — Main Street Breckenridge, the ski resort base areas, restaurants, and shops are all about 10 minutes north on Highway 9.
  • Free bus service — The Summit Stage bus system connects Blue River to Breckenridge and other Summit County towns at no charge.

Getting Around from Blue River

Blue River's central location in Summit County makes it an excellent base for exploring the entire region. Breckenridge is a 10-minute drive north. Keystone is about 20 minutes. Copper Mountain is 25 minutes. Silverthorne and the outlet stores are 15 minutes. And the free Summit Stage bus system has stops along Highway 9 for car-free access to Breckenridge.

The Blue River Neighborhood

The neighborhoods along Lodestone Trail and the surrounding streets are characterized by mature lodgepole pines, spacious lots, and mountain views. It's a residential community first — you're more likely to see a moose in your driveway than a tour bus. That's exactly why people love it.

Homes range from cozy cabins to larger mountain retreats, many built in the traditional Colorado mountain style with wood and stone. The neighborhood is well-maintained with plowed roads in winter and a genuine sense of community year-round.
